My insights for this quarter
In the first quarter, I set out to discover more about the early history of internet pioneers and how it all began. I learned about visionary men like Tim Berners-Lee and Vint Cerf who laid the basis we live with today. The effort of this creation has helped them outline a manner in which people communicated and accessed information that is now an indispensable aspect of modern life. I was also educated about the many other types of blogs such as the personal blogs, professional blog, niche content, and how they emerged alongside with the growth of the web as an approach of sharing knowledge and exposing opinions and experiences.
One of the key challenges that I faced is that to get it into one's head how intricate the development of the internet was over many decades and trying to understand the technical innovation that took place with its development. It was hard to envision how these great innovations evolved from small-scale networking into today's almost fluently streaming web while learning about the early development stages of networking and the complexities surrounding protocols like TCP/IP. It was also hard to envision how blogs transformed from humble personal journals to opinion influencers and how much their reach had expanded.
I approached learning step by step, breaking down the technical concepts of the history of the internet into pieces that are more digestible, hence usable for individual understanding. There is also the use of visual timelines and diagrams to understand how every milestone fits into the bigger picture of internet development. The blogs are explored, including varieties that can be read across different categories and see firsthand how they have transformed and diversified. Involvement with online communities and online discussions also helped me understand the technical as well as the cultural evolution of the respective platforms involved.
Going forward, I will continue to build my knowledge about the internet by continuing to be curious about emerging technologies and how they contribute to what was accomplished by the pioneers. I will strive to research the more niche types of blogs and perhaps even try to pen a few lines myself, in order to understand both the fashion in which new content creation dynamics shape individual expression and those by which it affects public communication. Finally, I will especially pay attention to what lessons from the past may guide us better through the future of digital communication and technology.
